I haven’t read the book and I can’t answer that because I’m not in it. You know, it was like radio waves and samples.ĮMPEROR WERE MENTIONED IN THAT BOOK ON THE NORWEIGIAN BLACK METAL SCENE CALLED "LORDS OF CHAOS." WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON ALL THAT?

The last one was just like noise, basically. I did three records and they sound nothing like each other. So it was like "Well…that album was… OK." There was one called Vond which kept changing. At one point I decided this side thing was going mediocre and I didn’t actually have time to spend time with all of those. I had some side projects but I killed them all so I could spend more time with Mortiis. I don’t know who the hell would have those tapes because I don’t think they even exist anymore, but I don’t have them myself. They were very underground Not even on a demo basis – just rehearsal tapes. I had a couple of bands before that but none you would’ve heard of. I lived in Sweden for five years but I left and just moved back to Norway. YOU ARE ORIGINALLY FROM NORWAY BUT RECENTLY SPENT SOME TIME IN SWEDEN. It’s fucked up because everyone like, goes to Burger King and then go and buy Diet Coke after that. We met at a show.Ī BRITISH GUY I SPOKE TO ONCE CALLED AMERICA THE "LAND OF THE FAT ARSE." WHAT DO YOU THINK? But this is only my second time here to do shows because I have an American girlfriend. My paranoia proved groundless since the "real" Mortiis is actually a very attractive and funny 24-year old mortal male that no one would recognize without his make-up…which is, of course, the whole point of having an alter-ego. His grim visage spooked me into taking protective measures and I dragged my buddy Tim Morse (drummer of seminal grindcore gurus, Anal Cunt) along to the interview at the Middle East in Cambridge, MA. It’s the story of a "spirit from far away…about the world that spirit created…a world beyond stars." This is Mortiis’ world which is a "different time and space, neither this world nor the next."

The Stargate, as its name implies, is an otherworldly amalgam of ambient soundscapes featuring the mesmerizing and beautiful soprano songbird calls of guest vocalist Sarah Jezebel Deva (Deva has also worked with Cradle of Filth). Although Emperor are credited for bringing public attention to black metal (and inspiring more corpse-painted musicians than you can shake a pitchfork at), Mortiis’ solo work has nothing in common with the genre other than his evil, elfin-like image. The former bassist of notorious Norwegian black metal band Emperor recently signed a 4-album deal with Earache who will also be re-releasing a collection of five separate 12" singles called Crypt of the Wizard. His previous work includes Fodt til A Herske (Born To Conquer), Anden Som Gjorde Oppror, and Keiser av en Dimensjion Ukjent (Emperor of a Dimension Unknown). The Stargate is Mortiis’ debut release for Earache Records, but it’s not his first.
